Manchester Ship Canal Liverpool to Manchester

Opened on the 21st of May 1894, the Manchester Ship Canal is 36 miles long and connects the Ocean going River Mersey to the Port of Manchester. The Canal is entered from the River Mersey at Eastham Locks and for the early part of its journey to Manchester runs parallel to the River . It passes Ellesmere Port Docks where there is a link into the Shropshire Union Canal and the home of the Narrow Boat Museum, past Stanlow Oil Refinery and on to Runcorn, Warrington, Irlam , Barton, Salford Quays and Manchester. It was used to take Ocean going ships up to Manchester,  Oil Tankers to Stanlow and Chemical Carriers to other ports on the route. Mersey Ferries now run a pleasure  trip along the canal in both directions and is a really good day out.
